Purpose
The child well-being is a concept developed in a manner to include the political and social factors in addition to the economic factors in order to address the multidimensional nature of the poverty and deprivation experienced by the children, which has become prevalent in the international efforts recently. This research intends to focus on the "well-being" of the child and determine the indicators needed for ensuring that they develop as individuals who are free and self-sufficient in the real sense and to share such indicators with the organizations and institutions working in the realm of children and poverty in Turkey and to develop suggestions for social policies in the light of the obtained data.
Participants
Children, parents, school principals and teachers and the organizations and institutions working in the realm of children and poverty, especially the relevant ministries.
Start and End Dates
15th October 2008 – 15th March 2010
Activities
The study includes qualitative and quantitative field survey in addition to literature search. The quantitative study consists of a public survey to be performed with 1200 children aged 12 and over and 800 parents in 100 neighborhoods in Istanbul, which we see as a little model of Turkey. The qualitative study, on the other hand, will take place through techniques such as observation, analytical interviews and focus group meetings with the children, parents and teachers in a neighborhood of Eyüp district, the activity field of the Children’s Studies Unit. Thus, it will be possible to watch the kids at places where the children are subjected to poverty and deprivation (neighborhood, school, health services, game area etc.) and to have a closer look on the processes involving family/children with the facilities existing in a neighborhood.
